Part of our Eating, Drinking, Thinking series with Kings Place.
For chefs, writers, influencers, and food storytellers, join Scottish-Malaysian writer Julie Lin to learn how to craft a compelling food book proposal. Drawing on her debut, Sama Sama, and media experience, she shares practical guidance for all.
Whether you are a chef, food writer, recipe developer, influencer or simply someone with a passion for storytelling through food, this workshop is about creating a compelling, professional book proposal that will capture the attention of publishers and agents.
Writing a food book isn’t just about great recipes — it’s about voice and clarity of purpose. A strong proposal shows not only what your book will offer readers but also why you are the one to write it and why now is the right time for it to exist.
There could be no-one better to lead this workshop than Julie Lin, Scottish-Malaysian food writer, chef and broadcaster, whose first book, Sama Sama, was published in 2025 to great acclaim. Julie will reflect on her own experiences of pitching, writing and promoting her first book, and on building a strong profile through social media, journalism and regular media appearances, including on the BBC’s Saturday Kitchen Live. Over the course of this workshop, Julie will break down the essential components of a successful proposal.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a clearer sense of direction, the tools to develop your proposal and the confidence to present your idea.
Eating, Drinking, Thinking is a series of exclusive workshops with limited availability. The price of the ticket includes a copy of Julie’s book, Sama Sama: Comfort Food from My Mixed Malaysian Kitchen.
This masterclass is arranged in a cabaret-style seating format. For couples and groups who wish to sit together, please book seats at the same table number at the booking link (subject to availability).
This event will last approximately 3 hours, including an interval.
