Overall winner: Cauldron Noodles by Jianhui Liao
Chinese photographer Jianhui Liao has been named winner of the 2019 Pink Lady® Food Photographer of the Year Award, the world’s most prestigious competition focused on food photography and film. His stunning image, titled Cauldron Noodles, was taken in Shexian County, Hebei Province in North Eastern China. It shows villagers dressed in Qing Dynasty costumes eating from a communal noodle pot, as part of a celebration of the birthday of the Godess Nvwa. Jianhui Liao was awarded his £5000 prize by Andy MacDonald, Managing Director of Pink Lady® Apples in the UK and Master of Ceremonies Alex James, cheese-maker and former member of indie band Blur.
Choosing from over 9000 entrants, the highest ever since the competition’s formation in 2011, was a prestigious panel of judges including David Loftus (Chair of judges), one of the world’s leading food photographers, known for his work with Jamie Oliver; Alice Waters, owner of Chez Panisse in Berkeley, California; and Xanthe Clay, food columnist for the Daily Telegraph.
